Well, it finally happened.
On Wednesday afternoon, while texting my girls Jenna and Nicole in our almost-daily-texting-thread, I accidentally dropped my iPhone in the toilet. I'll be the first to admit that I use my iPhone while using the restroom. Afterall, it is quite boring in there with nothing to do but stare at the floor. And as a new mom, it really is my private time away to check Instagram, Twitter, and whatnot. Perhaps too much information here on this blog, but what you see is what you'll get-- and you'll always get real over fake when it comes to me.
Moving on...
So I dropped my iPhone and immediately fished for it out of the toilet (praise God it was BEFORE I actually starting going) and it was like a childhood game of "Hot Potato." I successfully retrieved it, wiped it off with a washcloth, shook the water out of it, and plunged it in a bag of rice. After a few hours in the rice, my mom and I heard my phone beep out the sound of incoming texts as we were sitting in the living room. It turned on! I had a signal! I had contact with the outside world! But since all of the articles I read on this topic online suggested that the phone remain submerged in the rice for 24 hours, I kept my iPhone in the bag and kept it turned off.

I forgot how much I love and adore my iPhone. My sweet friend Jen loves her iPhone so much she even named it Phoebe. I realized after this tragic 24 hours without my iPhone that perhaps my phone needs a name, too. Maybe I'll name her Jane or Samantha, who knows. But she is definitely a huge part of my life and I missed her like crazy!
In addition to going to the bathroom solo, I did the following:
- Read a few chapters of my book, "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voscamp (that I've been reading forever!).
- Read a few magazines (Glamour, I feel like I'm a little too old for you these days-- am I that old and that much of a mom now!?!) that have been sitting in a stash unread since I had Eden.
- Drove into the city and back for a trip to Costco with my man (thank you, Mom, for babysitting so that we could go baby-free!) and enjoyed a fun conversation with him with no iPhone distractions.

- Spent the afternoon with my baby girl 100% attentive and devoted to her without wondering if I had a Facebook message or Instagram notification.
So 24 hours later, I was able to turn my phone back on and to my relief, it works almost perfectly despite the water intake. The alerts started coming in, my e-mail inbox got cluttered and the familiar sense of feeling overwhelmed took over me all too familiarly.
24 hours without my iPhone reminded me of how important it is to turn off my phone here and there and just live without distractions in technology. It reminded me of this post. It convicted me of how much I need to just take in each and every moment with those I love and be present because these moments are fleeting.
Turns out a simple mistake turned out to be one of the best things that happened to me all week :)
